Umrao has origin from the word ' Umarhar'. Umrao is a sub caste of 'Kurmi' (also known as Kurmi Kshatriya) and living in the region of Gangatic plains in the districts of Fatehpur (Bindki Tehsil) and Kanpur Nagar (Ghatampur Tehsil) of Uttar Pradesh between Ganga and Yamuna river. They comes under Hindu Sanatani. Earlier this community known by 'Umarhar' but in the 60th decade 'Umrao' surname came into practice. Some person also used Verma and Singh surname. However, new generation is interested to use 'Patel' surname. Umrao Kurmies were basically cultivator/agriculturalist caste but new generation is developing in many other areas. It believed that umrao kurmi came from a place 'umarhar' situated in Rajsthan. Umrao Kurmi population spreads over 140 villages ( about 114 villages in Fatehpur and 26 villages in Kanpur Nagar) of both districts. Late Hajari Prasad Verma and Smt Ram Kali were the first government servants of this community. Late Ram Kishor Verma (R/o Village Asadhana, Tehsil Ghatampur, Kanpur Nagar) was the first MLA of Umrao Kurmi community from Jahanabad Assembly Constituency of Fatehpur, who was elected in the year 1967 as independent candidate. Thereafter, Madan Gopal Verma was elected MLA from Janta Dal/Samajwadi Party in the year 1993, 2002 and 2012. In the year 2017, Jai Kumar Singh Jaiki was elected MLA from Apana Dal (Sonelal). Jai Kumar Singh Jaiki is also state minister in the Yogi Adityanath Government. Sukhdev Prasad Verma was also elected MLA from Bindki assembly constituency in the year 2007 and 2012 from Bahujan Samaj Party. Chandra Pal Verma was first Block Pramukh from Umrao Kurmi community from Devmai Block. Umakant Umrao is first IAS officer of MP cadre 1996 batch. Umakant Umrao is known for 'The Dewass Model'. The Dewas Model was selected by the United Nations as one of the best water management practices globally in 2011-12. Since, then Umrao's model has been replicated in several drought-prone areas. Recently, Umakant Umrao was selected one of the 10 best IAS officers by 'Better India'. Ved Prakash Verma was the first PCS officer of this community, who later on promoted in IAS and hold the post of district magistrate of Bhadohi and Amroha districts. Now he is retired and settled in Kanpur Nagar. Ashish Kumar is also IAS officer of up cadre 2014 batch, who got 9th rank. Rajiv Umrao is IPS officer (Indian Postal Service), Rajesh Kumar is IRTS officer, Piyush Verma is IFS officer(Indian Foreign Service) and Gargi Umrao is IRAS officer (Indian Railway Accounts Service) of this community. Prashant Umrao, Advocate is a well known name in Supreme Court. Now this community spreads across India as well as foreign countries. Vivek Umrao is a well known face in the field of Author, Journalist, Educationist, Social Economist, Social Environmentalist etc., who is presently settled in Australia.
