Introduction of Umrao Kurmi

Umrao has origin from the word ' Umarhar'. Umrao is a sub caste of 'Kurmi' (also known as Kurmi Kshatriya) and living in the region of Gangatic plains in the districts of Fatehpur (Bindki Tehsil) and Kanpur Nagar (Ghatampur Tehsil) of Uttar Pradesh between Ganga and Yamuna river. They comes under Hindu Sanatani. Earlier this community known by 'Umarhar' but in the 60th decade 'Umrao' surname came into practice. Some person also used Verma and Singh surname. However, new generation is interested to use 'Patel' surname. Umrao Kurmies were basically cultivator/agriculturalist caste but new generation is developing in many other areas. It believed that umrao kurmi came from a place 'umarhar' situated in Rajsthan. Umrao Kurmi population spreads over 140 villages ( about 114 villages in Fatehpur and 26 villages in Kanpur Nagar) of both districts. Late Hajari Prasad Verma and Smt Ram Kali were the first government servants of this community....
